CHAPTER 56

She knocked on the door of their self contain. It was only Priscilla at home, she was in bed caressing with her boyfriend, she ignored the knock on the door.
“Baby there’s somebody at the door.” The young man said to her.
“I know, I am in the mood, I don’t want anyone to spoil this one for me.” She said kissing his lips.
“Hold on baby go and check who is at the door.” He said taking his lips away from her reach, she was so angry, she stormed to the locked door, he followed behind her, she threw the door open it was Dooshima, she made an angry face.
“Dooshima what is it again this morning? ” Priscilla said angrily.
“Please can I’ve small food for my baby she’s really hungry, she hasn’t eaten anything since this morning.” Dooshima said with a sad face.

“Is that why you should come and be knocking at my door? we don’t pay money together oh, we’ve told you what to do, if you cannot do it , just don’t come and be disturbing somebody’s life.”
She said as she turned back into the room, tears fall off Dooshima’s eyes, she wiped it off with her hands.
“Mummy are you crying? ” Shania asked with an infant melancholic voice.
“No I am fine . ” She said as turned away from the door.
“Please wait.” The young man said, as he entered into the house and returned with five thousand naira, which he handed to Dooshima. “Am so sorry I’ll talk to Priscy it was wrong for her to talk to you in that manner.”
Dooshima thanked the young man profusely. For over one month she had used up the last of money, Shania’s need was beyond her strength. Mama Amos the landlady had been the one feeding both she and her daughter for three weeks. The old woman had gone for burial at Vandikiya.

Dooshima had gotten a job as waiter at a local restaurant, she had to quit when one of the male customers touched her buttocks indecently, she had reported to her boss. Instead of her boss reprimanding the man, she poured it hot on Dooshima.
“If he doesn’t touch your buttocks what should get touch? What is your use here? to wash plate and serve food? my small daughter can do that.
I brought you here to be able to attract customers to me, if you cannot do that a beg get out! ” She had said to Dooshima. She left the shop and went to back of the house to cry her life, she had never been humiliated that way in her life.
She had to work to feed her child, so after crying she went back to continue her work , she became very vigilant to watch against any man attempting to touch her.
What made he leave the job, was when the lady laid her hands on her. Dooshima was doing the dishes in the kitchen, when a ceramic plate slipped from her hand and crashed unto the ground , the plate was shredded into many thousand pieces. Her boss gave her a resounding brain resetting slap, me doused her with the bowl of dirty water.

Dooshima had to hold on to the wall to keep from falling, she was soak from head to toe, with dirty yellowish water, she had used to wash the dirty plate. The woman walked away as If she had done nothing.
“Madam you are wicked oh! ” a male customer said to the restaurant owner. “Did you just slapped her ,because of one plate? ” One customer asked the mean woman.
“Yes I slapped her. What will you do? ” She asked the man angrily. “If you’ve eaten your food that brought you here, just carry your dead body and go. who called you into this conversation? ” She said rudely, the man washed his hands, and got up from the table.
“Mr man where do you think you’re going? and pay me for the food. If you don’t want to eat it, that’s not my business. ” The woman grabbed the man’s shirt, he rained down slaps on her face, before leaving without paying. she turned to Dooshima.
“Oya come and start going . If I ever see your two legs near this shop, I swear na hot water I go take bath you idiot! ” She shoved Dooshima out of her shop. She wept along the way to mama Amos shop, where she had left Shania.

“Lillian am sorry ehn. Where is your parents? You look like a girl from a rich family. ” the old woman said. Dooshima didn’t want to talk about her parents, she picked Shania and returned home.
Later that evening Prisca heard what her twin sister did, she forced her to coma and tender an apology to Dooshima. Dooshima had cooked noodles and egg for Shania ,
she was thinking about what she would do with the balance, she couldn’t afford getting completely broke again.
Prisca came with half bag of rice, some dried fish, a bottle of groundnut oil, with a pack of Maggi .
“Dooshima I heard what Priscilla did to you. Am very sorry, it was rude of her.” She said, Priscilla nodded in agreement. “We brought this little rice, it would help you and your baby for some days.” Prisca said.

“Thank you Priscilla and Prisca but I think I’ll be fine, Shania will be fine too. I just thought since we were friends I could ask for small food for my baby, she was very hungry. ” They all turned to Shania who was sitting on the bare floor eating noodles and egg like an old woman.
“You know you cannot reject our gift? ” Prisca said.
“Priscilla’s boyfriend gave us five thousand naira. It will serve us for some day. you should keep the food you need it.” She said.
“Come on dear.” Prisca said. “Priscilla is sorry, just take the food.”
“I am sorry Dooshima, it’s just that I was having a good time with my boyfriend and you came to interrupt it.” She said.
“Am sorry about that, my baby was crying for food.” Dooshima said, she had not eaten any food for two days, just drinking water, she couldn’t even get Garri to drink since mama

Amos went for the burial, whatever food she found she saved it for her child. She had stopped breastfeeding her at eight months, her breast stopped producing milk, she wondered if it was as a result of the lack of food.
“Just take the food.” Priscilla said. “Prince is a nice guy he’s going to take care of you and your daughter. He’s from a rich family, he said he likes you and wants to marry you.” Prisca said with a serious face. Dooshima smiled.
“No I’m not going to trade my body for money, I’ll rather take more slaps than allow any man sleep with me because of the money.” She said. the twins were disappointed, they left the bag of rice with Dooshima and left.
