CHAPTER 112

“Ogwuche I am sincerely sorry for all I put you through , I tried to love you my husband ,I know it wasn’t your fault that we ended up in a loveless marriage.
I never dreamt of such a life for myself , but when we are from Africa where a girl cannot have a say about who she will marry , I blame my father .
Before you will see this later I must have long gone away from Ohimini, I am sorry , I didn’t plan to kill our children , I will take the guilt to my grave , there were my source of happiness, they wiped my tears from my eyes , but death snatched them because of my sin , I would have wished that I died and they lived.
Maybe I wouldn’t have cheated if you ever loved me , or tried, I am not pushing the blames , but your heart was not in the marriage , even when you stopped talking about her , you were still far away from me , I felt I was holding you a prisoner.
As I told you , I slept with only Fiance, he’s the man I love from secondary school , I’m not promiscuous, it’s only been two men who have seen my nakedness, just you and him . Please forgive me for causing the death of our children . But for the tradition, I cannot do what the chief priest say .

If Alekwu will kill me so be it , I pray I take away the death I brought upon your head , please forgive me , Alice is a product of my relationship with ex , I am taking her with me , please forgive me , for not being brave enough to follow up with the cleansing traditions, we have both suffered enough .
I wish you the best , thank you for the love you showed to Alice and her late brothers.” Ogwuche read the letter in silence , he sat quietly reminiscing on the past seven years of his life , the wasted life , he wondered how his life would have been if he had not come home .
Ogwuche remained indoors all day , not setting his feet out of the house , Ene had dished out breakfast for him and his family before she went to her farm , Onyabehi was supposed to go and pick it , she returned from farm around four P.M to find Ogwuche’s door locked .
Ogwuche heard his mother’s knock from outside the house , he refused to answer , but she kept knocking . “Mama what is it Na ? go away .” He hissed .
“Ogwuche come and open the door , what are you doing inside where is Onyabehi and Alice ?” She asked , Ogwuche opened the door to let his mother in . “What did you eat since morning see the food I left for you and your wife , has gone cold , where did she go ?” Ene asked .

“she’s gone ?” Ogwuche said with a lackadaisical attitude.
“Gone you mean what? where could she be gone to ?” She asked .
“Mama she’s gone , I woke up this morning she packed her things she has gone , she left me this letter .” He passed it to his mother , Ene collected the letter and read through it .
“Uhmm so Onyabehi has mind like this ? My son get up , Come let me go and warm the food for you , only if men listen , I warned your father , let this two people get married , he wouldn’t listen . He went and stole somebody who was already engaged ,and forced you to marry her .” Ene said .
“I can’t promise I won’t do the same thing she did , how can a woman survive when she has a man that cannot do without her , but she is trapped by a man who cannot touch . Abeg I cannot blame the poor girl . Get up! come let me go and warm your food .”
She ordered Ogwuche , she placed a table for him outside and warmed the remaining rice and stew on the pot and served it to him , while she warmed and ate the portion she has dished out for him .

Simon kept calling Onyabehi , just to tell her that she must come to complete the ritual.
Simon had gone to a joint to drink and eat pepper soup with his friends, when he got back to the house , he felt a sharp pain on his chest , he kept massaging his chest with his hand.
He had returned from church that Sunday morning, and went to his usual joint to drink some bottles of Heineken beer and eat Cutting Grass bush meat.

But he couldn’t understand himself . “Ogar are you okay ?” Ene asked her husband as he kept rubbing his chest .
“Am fine just bring my food .” He said shrugging his shoulders . Ene returned with a table , with a judge of water , before she brought the plate of white rice and red chicken stew .
Simon scooped a spoonful into his mouth , it was as if the food aggravated the symptoms.
“Chachacha! Eleleleooh Ene I’ve been poisoned .” He grabbed his chest , and sank down on one knees. Ene threw away the tray of melon seeds she was peeling , she ran to her husband .
“Ogar what are you talking about Na my husband ?” She asked , Ogar began to vomit everything he had drank and ate , then he thick blood , and more blood . He looked at his wife’s face .
“Ene they’ve finally gotten me oh ! I am a dead man oh!” He held on to his stomach as he lay on the ground , the pains was unbearable, he Squeaked and cried as he rolled on the bare ground .
