CHAPTER 49

Ada had been doing everything in her power to get on Dooshima’s nerve, but she was too wise to respond to her. She had approached Dooshima after her husband left for the United States, to renegotiate the amount he had paid into her account.
“Ma I don’t have anything to share with you, I was given that amount to take care of myself and my child.” Dooshima replied her.
“Are you telling me to my face that you’ll not give me the money? ” Dooshima ignored her, she continued breastfeeding her child. “Am talking to you are you deaf or dumb? give me two hundred and fifty thousand and keep the rest for yourself.” She said.

“Ma I wasn’t given any money to keep for you. I beg you I’m the name of the Lord, leave me alone.” Dooshima insisted, Ada laughed.
“You think you’re stubborn abi? I’m going to show you pepper in this house. You’ll wish you had never met me in your life.” Ada vowed before she climbed into her bedroom that evening.
Dooshima sat with her baby at the sitting room till about ten P. M when she climbed up into her room. The next morning she noticed that the door to the kitchen was locked .
“Seriously she locked the kitchen?” She asked herself in a soliloquy. “How heartless can this woman be?” She mumbled to herself. She went to the security post to meet Samuel.
“Good morning Samuel please can I use your hot plate to boil some water? ” She pleaded.
“Yes you can,but why did you not boil the water in the kitchen? ” He asked.

“Nothing, please let me go and get the water.” She said, she went up and returned with a new aluminum kettle she had bought, after Ada stopped her from using the kettle in the kitchen.
He went back to her baby upstairs, Samuel brought the water to Dooshima, she mixed it with a basin of cold water she wanted to bath Shania with.
“Please help me boil some more, I want to pour it into the flask.” She said stretching the kettle to him, Samuel took the kettle without saying a word. He went to his post to put it on fire.
Mimidoo dropped by to check on Dooshima and her daughter Shania. She had brought along baby food and beverages for Dooshima. “Ahnahnn Mimi you don’t need to buy all this for us. Uncle Agada has already given us money that would take care of us. ” Dooshima said.
“Haaa that one is nothing, I just received my salary, I decided not to come empty handed to see my personal person.” Mimidoo said with a smile on her face, as she cuddled Baby Shania on her laps. “How has it been since Mr Agada travelled? ” Mimidoo asked.

“My dear this woman has been showing me pepper oh.” Dooshima confessed. “You won’t believe she locked the kitchen this morning before going to work, so I cannot boil water to bath Shania or make tea. I had to use the hot plate in the security guard’s place. ” Dooshima lamented.
“But why is that woman extremely wicked? what did you ever do to her Dooshima? ” Minidoo asked.
“Haa it’s the five hundred thousand naira, that Ogwuche’s uncle transferred to my account o, the aunty said I must share it fifty fifty. See me see trouble oh Mimidoo, should I blame her,if I had not put my in this condition would she have the guts to tell me rubbish? ” Dooshima asked.
“Well stop this self blame thing, the mistake had been done the child had been born. Now it’s time for you to get your life together and move on. Have you called your parents? ” Mimidoo asked, Dooshima made a funny face.
“Nopes! I’ve not called them, and I don’t plan to call them.” Dooshima said casually.
“What? you’re kidding me Dooshima ? why would you not call them? ” She asked.
“I’ve caused those people a lot of pains, my dad has been in the hospital for over a year it was all my fault. I ruined his work, both at school , at the governor’s office and in the church.

I hurt him so bad, I think even if my dad survives and comes back he’ll not need me, I’ll be a sad reminder of his little angel who dashed his hopes. ” She said with a serious face.
“Dooshima your parents love you and would want to see you when they return. I think you should go back to your family house, your siblings might have reconsidered.” Mimidoo adviced but Dooshima only chuckled.
“Seriously I don’t want to cause them more trouble I’ll relocate with Shania to Lagos or Abuja and look for a place to start my life , when Ogwuche’s uncle returns to Nigeria.” Dooshima said.
“Aaaaaar am famished let’s go and get food outside? ” Mimidoo suggested and Dooshima obliged. They went to a mama put two streets away from the Agada’s duplex.
Ogwuche was slowly recovering and was moving about the compound on his own. The sharp pain on his abdomen reminded him that one’s own blood might be one’s own killer.

He avoided Ejembi like a masquerade, they greeted but it ended there, Ogwuche couldn’t hurt a fly he wondered how his own blood brother had tried to end his existence.
Ogwuche had something to rejoice about,Onyabehi had put to bed a bouncing baby boy, his father was so proud of his grandson, who looked exactly like his replica.
He had bought a big black he goat for the naming ceremony of Ogwuche’s son, he was named Igoche in Idoma language and Innocent in English. He was so happy that he had a grandson,that would bear his name and carry on his father’s lineage.
Ogwuche was in a constant state of despair, always on his own, in his own world,except when he was carrying his son. Ogar had just returned from his Cassava farm at Ugene,
He unhappy about Ogwuche’s withdrawal from everyone, he had spoken to him, but his words always fell on stones or tortoise shell, again he saw Ogwuche sitting by himself under a mango tree at the center of the compound.
It had become his favourite spot, legs stretched in front of him , his two arms were tucked into his laps, he kept dangling his legs,he didn’t notice his father’s truck drive in. Ogar went in to take his bath and returned back to his son.
