CHAPTER 44

“Mama I cannot farm. When last did I go to farm? ” Ogwuche asked in disgust. “Are you on this plan papa to render me useless in this village? ” Ogwuche asked his mother angrily.
“What nonsense are you talking about, where you not here when he beat me, for telling him to let you marry who you want? ” She was a but disappointed.
“Mum I was earning two hundred thousand naira a month as a medical doctor. I cannot reduce myself to a village farmer. if that’s your plans for me, that won’t work.” Ogwuche said before he stomped out of the house. Ene was tired of talking to her son, he wasn’t listening to her at all.
Mr Agada had returned from work at about eight P. M when the gate man told him about Dooshima’s situation. “Has my wife gone to the hospital? ” He asked the gates.
“No sir madam is inside it’s Victor that drove her to the hospital. ” Mr Agada thanked his gate man and angrily went up to see his wife.

“Ada what’s wrong with you! Ada what’s wrong with you? How can you be here when our daughter is in the hospital? ” He asked .
“Which daughter? Ochanya is inside her room sleeping, so which daughter are you talking about? ” she feigned ignorance.
“Come on Ada you want to tell me you’re oblivious to my topic of conversation? ” Agada asked.
“Yes my husband I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She said looking innocent.
“You mean you don’t know that Victor drove with Lillian to the hospital? ” she smiled.
“Oh you mean Lillian? why did you call her our daughter? I thought you meant Ochanya ” She asked. “Well I was so tired from work, I went to bed, I don’t know Victor took her to the hospital, why did he not come to wake me up? ” She asked.

“Let’s be heading to the hospital now! ” he said.
“Now ? ” he nodded. “But you just came back , you should at least eat and take your bath before we…” Mr Agada didn’t allow any discouragement from her slow him.
“Come let’s go now, or I’ll leave you behind.” He said before walking out of the sitting room.” Ada went upstairs and changed into an outing cloth.
They got to the hospital at about eight P. M Dooshima had put to bed, she had a beautiful baby girl.
“Wow she looks exactly like Ogwuche. ” Ada said, holding the baby wrapped in a blanket like an egg.
“Lillian how are you doing? how do you feel? ” Mr Agada asked Dooshima, she managed a small smile.

“I am fine sir.” She said, Mimidoo had just returned from the supermarket where she had gone to get provisions for Dooshima.
“Now you an Onogeh again. ” He teased Dooshima, she laughed heartily. Victor had his hands folded over his chest, he watched quietly as his mother played with the child, he wondered what kind of hypocrite she was, he knew she must have cooked a satisfactory lie and served it to her mother without conscience.
Mimidoo brought a hot cup of tea to Dooshima, she was off duty , so she devoted her whole time to Dooshima.
Dooshima was discharged to go home, that same evening, Mimidoo escorted them home. She would be the one to be coming to the Agada’s house to bath the mother and baby. Dooshima had told him what had happened when she was in labour.
“Sir just give me one trial in your hospital. Those allegations are not correct, she is my girlfriend she’s pregnant with my child. I didn’t rape her in the sense that they said it, we both drank and then we got into the mood, and had sex.” Ogwuche tried to explain to the Medical director of the private hospital.

“Dr Ogwuche I should say you’re a fine gentleman. But the allegation against you by the medical council is a weighty one, if I employ you here I may risk having my licence revoked too. ” He said to Ogwuche, he was down casted, he had searched for job for half the amount he was collecting at Gboko, but no hospital was ready to accept him.
He was walking home, she decided to check his android phone to check the updates. He checked his uncles story, he saw a baby, it looked so much like him, Ogwuche found a stone with which he sat down under a mango tree.
“God please tell me what’s wrong with me? ” Ogwuche said in a soliloquy. “How can my life come from so good to this bad? Now I’ve to ask my father for money to buy boxers, they feed me.
See my baby and her mother needs me, shut can’t I live here? God come and help me. ” He cried. Not minding people slowing down to check if Ogar’s son had gone mad. He didn’t reply them, he lifted his face to the sky in supplication.
When he got home that evening he did not have strength for dinner he just went to bed, when Ogar asked about him, Onyabehi told him he had slept a few minutes after he has returned from his job hunt.

“Ogwuche wake up please.” Onyabehi pleaded with her husband, Ogwuche rolled in bed.
“what is it na! ” he yelled at Onyabehi. “Can you not stay on your own? Why are you frustrating my life even more? ” he asked dispirited.
“Please come and do it, the doctor said I need it to keep me ready for delivery.” Ogwuche pushed her hands away from his body.
“See Onyabehi just leave me alone I don’t have power to do anything! ” He grunted and went back to sleep. Onyabehi watched him with tears forming in her eyes.
She was being starved and Ogwuche never cared about how he made her feel, for close to two months Ogwuche had refused to touch her. He would bring an issue up that would make them to stay on different islands just for him not to do his night duties .
