CHAPTER 129

Bright white giant canopies, covered every space in Pastor Gamadi’s Gboko home , dignitaries had travelled from all around the country to grace the occasion of professor Gamadi’s daughter’s traditional marriage .
Tiv live gospel bands , played live as the people twisted and sang along with the musicians, the atmosphere was boisterous,Mimidoo and Annabel danced to the beautiful music , Mrs Seember and Bemshima danced together in Joy and delight , Seember had always wanted her children to marry from the upper class they belonged.
Dooshima was sitting on a royal chair next to Terfa , he was so joyful , dressed in a white Agbada and black designers shoe, a black Yoruba fila cap , with large white stripes sat on his head like a horseman on a horseback, the black and white symbolised the Tiv traditional wear.
Dooshima sat on a golden coloured royal chair , she was wearing a Black and white Aso Ke gown, with a matching gele head tie , a silver coloured shoe was on her feet , with a brand new gold watch on her wrist , her dad had purchased that for her as her wedding gown , she was well dressed , but looking sulky as if she had just lost a relative.
She sat with a flaccid face , her face wrinkled in a grimace, sadness plastered her face . Seember danced close to her daughter .

“Dooshima why are you ruining the day with your sour look . it’s not your burial today , it’s your wedding wear a cheerful face .”She said , Dooshima hissed her face became even harder .
A man from Terfa’s family came up to the couple , and spoke into his ears , he got up and followed him to a room in Dooshima’s father’s house , were elderly men from both families met , and were discussing the dowry.
“Dooshima is a first class graduate and a lawyer , so her dowry should be fifteen million naira .” Tyehimba who was prof Gamadi’s younger brother said , the professor bursted into laughter.
“Tyehimba are we selling Dooshima ? Akase here is my good friend , it would be a thing of joy for my daughter to be married to his son . Welcome Terfa , sit down .” Dooshima’s dad said .He got a space near his father and sat down .
“We are here as culture demands to collect the dowry for my daughter Dooshima , You heard my brother , he demanded for fifteen million naira . I am giving you my daughter free of charge Terfa , Dooshima is the apple of my eyes , I don’t want you to make her cry .” The pastor said .

“Akase you have to draw the ears of your son .” He said turning to the father . “Your boy was raised in a Christian home , so I expect him to respect my daughter , I’ll just ask for ten thousand naira to fulfill tradition.”
Professor Gamadi said , Akase and his brothers put head together, they had brought a Ghana must go of money to pay for Dooshima’s bride price , but Akase wasn’t surprised when his friend made a very small demand , he knew the professor not to be a materialistic person .
They paid the dowry of ten thousand , to the pastor . “Oh God I commit this money that has been paid as dowry , may it open doors of wealth upon this young man here and my daughter in the name of Jesus.” The pastor prayed , they all said amen .
They returned to the ceremony , the dancing and music continued Dooshima sat glued to her chair , if her mother pressured her too much to dance she would get up and dance with Terfa with a sour face , she didn’t allow him to hold her for long , soon she would be back on her seat watching the party go on .
“Now the wife will go and take wine from her father’s hand and take it to her fiance.” The MC said , Dooshima went to her dad she knelt down and was given a glass cup, her father poured in the red wine into the glass , Dooshima got up and walked to Terfa she knelt before him and handed him the glass of wine with a straight face.

He smiled and collected it from her and gulped down every last bit , he handed the cup to Dooshima ,then got up from his royal seat and embraced Dooshima , she turned her face away from him , as though he disgusted her .
The people broke into a made roar , singing and shouting . Dooshima returned to her chair without saying a word .
Ogwuche had been standing at the far back , he had entered the big compound like the other thousands of people who came around.
He watched until Dooshima gave the wine to Terfa he made his way out of the compound , his uncle and aunt had tried not to let him know where they were going , but he knew her wedding was on Wednesday of that week , so he strolled to the house , fortunately for him , he was given access into the compound.
He knew all hope was over for him, so he called Ajuma as he was trekking home .

“Hello Doctor Ogwuche how are you doing ?” She said over the phone . “I thought you wouldn’t call my number again .” The young lady said .
“Sorry I’ve been busy , I’ve a lot on my plate . Will you be busy later in the day ? ” Ogwuche asked .
“No not really , are you coming ?” Ajuma asked .
“Most likely , I just need a friend to talk to right now , my head is bursting ehn .” Ogwuche said .
“Well I’ll be closing from work around three , we can meet then . “She said. “That’s fine by me , should I come to the hospital?” Ogwuche asked .
“No , wait for me at North Bank.”She said . “Okay no problem, thank you .” Ogwuche said , she chuckled . “Thank me for what ? I didn’t do anything for you .” She said before she hung up the call .

Ogwuche went home, he soak himself in cold water in the bathtub, he lay there crying all alone , a bottle of dry gin sat next to the bath , he couldn’t summon the strength to raise the bottle to his mouth . At twelve P.M he got out of the bathtub, then wore a sky-blue shirt a blue jeans and a brown jacket with tiny black and red stripes, he walked to the mirror .
“My life has not ended , like the Pheonix I’ll rise , I rise further than my dreams , when love fails life goes on , it’s not the end of me, it’s just a phase an experience to learn from .” He said , then sprayed the lavender body spray all over his jacket , he brushed his dark black low cut hair .
“If I have three days to spend in Nigeria , let me spend it doing something memorable.” He chuckled. “I’ll spoil myself a bit .” He continued soliloguising and making positive affirmations on himself .
“Wow Oga Ogwuche you fine sha oh .” The maid said , as she walked pass Ogwuche on the staircase . “Na woman you want go see .” She added , her bold and funny remark made Ogwuche chuckle as grabbed the keys to his uncle’s BMW .
He got drove the Suv out of the compound ,he enjoyed Afrobeat songs as he drove towards Makurdi, he was hurrying to no where , he took his time to enjoy the serenity of the environment, the green endless Savanah of the Benue flatlands.

He played Burna Boy and Davido songs through the flash drive he had gotten . The several police check points on the road , was so boring , it made the journey longer .
It wasn’t a check point , because they were not checking anything except a driver that refused to , they’ll then do the real police job,and search him thoroughly. They didn’t disturb Ogwuche because he wasn’t carrying passengers , the screen of his car was wind up .
The beautiful site of the river Benue that has curved around Makurdi towards the Gboko highway announced his arrival to Makurdi , The men of Nigerian airforce had mounted roadblocks in front of their barracks , which was on the right hand side of the Gboko highway, an aircraft was molded with concrete , it looked like a small jet rising into the sky , for a dog fight .
Ogwuche entered Makurdi around two thirty P.M he drove straight to North Bank and was waiting for Doctor Ajuma at a chicken republic fast food joint , while he took a bottle of five alive with fried rice and chicken, he had not eaten anything the whole of that day .
“Ogwuche where are you now ?” The doctor asked when Ogwuche picked her call .

“Oh Doc Doc am at Chicken Republic , you said two three P.M but you’re twenty minutes late .” Ogwuche said she laughed softly.
“Well doctor Ogwuche am sorry we had a patient in the psychiatric ward, he got himself hooked up on drugs , we had to do extensive counseling so it took up our time , I know you understand.” She said .
“Well it’s been long I was called a doctor I don’t even feel like one anymore .” Ogwuche said .
“Uhmmm it’s not about how you feel , it’s about what you know and the certificate you hold , I just got home now , let me take my bath, I’ll soon be on my way . I will drive there soon.” she said .
“I came with a car … so you might want to use an Uber…” Ogwuche said , Ajuma screamed over the phone . “What are you okay ?” Ogwuche asked .

“Am fine an so excited that you can now drive yourself, seems our counseling worked .” She said he chuckled in his deep baritone voice. “Come on don’t let your head get big , I decided to move on , and I sha met somebody who made me feel like my world isn’t about to end .” Ogwuche said .
“Uhhh! could that person be this amazing and beautiful charming Idoma princess ?” Ajuma teased him .”I have told you , don’t make your head get too big oh , see ehn you just need to calm down Ajuma …”
Ogwuche said laughing , Ajuma laughed and hung the call , he didn’t think he could fall in love so fast , he thanked God that he didn’t obey the voice that had told him to go and buy Otapiapia and end it all the day he beaten by the police men at Dooshima’s house .
