CHAPTER 40

The gate man knocked on the door of Agada’s house for a long while, when nobody came to the door. He had to dial his number.
“What is it Terver? ” he asked with a thick baritone voice, the sleep had made his voice deeper.
“Ogar Ogwuche’s wife is here with her friend they want to see you. ” He said.
“What by this late hour? ” He asked, he jumped out of the bed.
“Where are you going? ” Ada said, trying to rub off sleep from her eyes .
“Lillian is in the compound , I want to go and see her.” He said, Ada hissed.

“What’s she doing here at this time? ” Ada babbled. “Does she not have sense of time? why would she be coming here so late in the night? ” She quareled.
Her husband ignored her and left the bedroom she trudged behind him, she plopped on the couch arms crossed over her chest, she waited impatiently the reason why Dooshima would come to wake them up in the middle of night.
“Lillian why are you crying? ” Mr Agada said as he embraced the shaken lady, she couldn’t say , she was soaked in tears.
“She we were attacked by some hoodlums at Dooshima’s house, they broke in and wanted to rape us” Mimidoo said, Agada was too stunned to believe.
“Come here my daughter, am so sorry.” He said as he embraced her. “Come and sit down, Ada please fix Lillian and her friend cups of tea.” He said as he sat down next to Dooshima, he could see the fear in her eyes.

“Lillian calm down you can talk to me.” Agada said to Dooshima. “Tell me what really happened? ” He said. “Calm down Lillian, so talk to me, talk to me okay? ” Dooshima nodded.
Ada had returned with hot water she had boiled with the electric jug in an plastic jug and a tin of powder milk and Bournvita beverage.
“What happened? ” He asked. “Talk to me.” Ada had handed over the brown ceramic cup to Dooshima.
“it all started early this week. ” Dooshima said. “I was seeing my friend here Mimi off , when some group of boys at a drinking joint standing making rude comments about me, and staring at me in a perverted way. I didn’t pay so much attention to them.”
She sniffed and wiped the tears from her eyes. Ada sat down with her husband listening to Dooshima.

“So on my way back one of the boys now dead, blocked me he harassed me.” Dooshima broke down in tears.
“He assualted me, one of the guys he was drinking with came to my rescue, nobody else said anything, he was a terrible guy on that street. He said he would forcefully have his way, he called me names, called me a prostitute.” Dooshima wiped her eyes.
“He said he would come to my house and take his share of my body, I tried to run back home to my parents house were we have police guards. My younger brother left instructions with the police men not to let me in” She said still sobbing.
“I returned back to the house, I didn’t know what to do, I kept seeing him around my house, looking inside the house.” Dooshima said.

“So yesterday I called Mimi to come and stay with me, he didn’t show up the whole of yesterday and today. But then he broke into my house with his gang they were all armed with pistols.
The same one who had stopped him from harassing me on the street, came in and shot him and one of the thugs. He dropped me off here, and went away.” Mr Agada came close and held Dooshima in an embrace.
“You should have come to me Lillian, I didn’t know, I thought you were okay. I blame myself, I should have been checking on you, but I have been so busy, you know this is election period and we’ve been moving all across the state.”Mr Agada said.
” You’re going to stay with me and my family until your parents return back to Nigeria.” Ada glared at her husband angrily. She kept shifting on her chair, with a grimace on her face. He ignored her. “Please Ada go and make Ogwuche’s room for Lillian.
She got up and stormed her way upstairs. ” I am indebted to your family, your dad had been so instrumental to the success of my life, both spiritually and physically. And Ogwuche is my son.

I just want you to be prayerful Lillian go back to God. Ogwuche’s father has turned him to…” He paused . “He’s my brother but…” He paused, Dooshima couldn’t understand what he was driving to. she didn’t want to think of Ogwuche she just needed to find a safe place to have her baby. She had a few months to her month.
Ada led Dooshima and Mimidoo upstairs, the room brought her memories a place where all her troubles had started.
The same bed she had lost her virginity, she cried so much that night, she missed him, she missed his smell, she missed his touch, she missed his calm voice it kept playing in her head even though she had not heard from him for months, she just wished he would come back to him.
“Dooshima why are you still crying? please catch some sleep, you need to rest for the baby. ” Mimidoo mumbled when Dooshima’s whimpering woke her up from bed.
She touched Dooshima’s neck, it was burning hot. “You need medication, I’ll go and get you medication first thing tomorrow morning.” Mimidoo said.

“Please stop crying, you make me sad. If God doesn’t let anything happen it cannot happen.” She said.
Dooshima’s heard was aching so badly, she felt as if she was being hit with a big log of wood on her head. She drifted into sleep at about five A. M after having a warm water bath.
She saw beautiful dreams of she and Ogwuche in a beautiful garden with their beautiful daughter Shania it felt so real that she was smiling in her sleep , tears rolled down her cheeks, when she woke up the next morning only to know that it was only a dream.
