CHAPTER 25

The old Jincheng Motorcycle roared in frustration as Ogbole and his sons sat on the old rickety machine, as they stumbled towards their farm.
“I told you boys to go and weed that farm since three weeks ago , you will be giving excuse all the time.” He quarreled. “You’ll not come and work on your father’s own farm. You’ll go and spend your time working in other people’s farms.” He said the two young men sat quiet. “But you’ll be the ones to finish all the food at home.”
They had to save some money for themselves, they had to work hard in farms to have their own money, their father never appreciated them with catch when he sold the farm produce, they couldn’t tell him so because he would ask who had been feeding them.
When they got to the farm, Ogbole disembarked from the motorcycle, he parked it under a Locust bean tree, a little way from his farm.
“Come and carry the Kunu.” He said to his son, the guinea corn beverage would come handy in the afternoon when the sun had scourged them, they would take it to strengthen themselves.

His younger son, walked to the motorcycle and grabbed the drink, immediately Ogbole stepped into the farm he slumped on a heap.
“Papa! Papa! “Owoicho cried. ” Papa! ” He put ear against his his father’s chest he wasn’t responding . “Oloche Go and get the bike here! ” Owoicho ordered his younger brother who ran back towards the locust bean tree and rode the motorcycle over the heaps to the place his father was lying. They lifted Ogbole and placed him on the motorcycle.
Owoicho sat in front of his father, Ogbole’s body lay on him,while Oloche sat behind holding him so he wouldn’t fall off, his body was falling from side side. They abandoned their cutlass and hoes, with every other things they had brought to the farm.
Owoicho drove the motorcycle at crazy speed, out of the farm, they drove straight for the Agaba hospital. “Doctor come and help! help my father! my father! ”
Owoicho cried as they carried their father into the hospital. Dr Agaba owned and ran the hospital with three doctors and ten nurses. It was the nearest hospital to them.

The doctor ran to the man who who was lying on a stretcher in front of his reception , his white eyes was focused on the ceiling above, tears was dropping from his eyes.
He put the stethoscope on his chest to check his heart beat, it was not responding. He placed his index and third finger to his neck, he felt no pulse.
“Sir is my father alright?” Owoicho asked. the doctor ignored him and got a Sphygmomanometer to check his blood pressure. It was zero.
“Am sorry my friends your father is dead.” He said the boys fell on the ground, rolling and crying.
“No na! doctor my father was fine this morning, he was fine! he rode the bike to the farm, how can he die na! no! ” He kept wailing and rolling on the ground. Men cried until their eyes swelled.

Ogwuche rolled off Onyabehi’s body, and turned his face to the wall, like he always did each time they finished making love.
“Ogwuche you’re a good person. Maybe I could have loved you, if I wasn’t forced. I came because I didn’t want to be beaten, I know my father ,I saw what he did when she refused to marry who he choose,I fear him.
I had a man I love with all my heart but my dad forced me to be here,I am trying all my best to make this work but you’re not trying at all .” Onyabehi said to Ogwuche.
“I don’t know why you agreed to this, I don’t see passion or zeal in your eyes for me, you treat me as if I was dirty. I know you don’t love me.” She said almost crying.
“I will be your wife, and bear your children. But I don’t think I can love you,if you can’t love me back. We’ve found ourselves here,we have to learn how to make the best of it.”

She said as they lay in bed, Ogwuche’s face was turned to the wall. “You can have my body I have given it to you,do whatever you want. I won’t because you’re a doctor lost my dignity.” She said.
“Okay .”was all he said.
” Is that all you will say?” She asked. “You don’t even talk to me, you don’t discuss with me is this how we are going to grow our family?” She asked, Ogwuche remained silent. She broke into tears.
“I never asked for this, you don’t make a move to touch me, why did you not reject me when they brought me here why did you accept me? you’re making my life worst.”
Ogwuche didn’t say a word he remained silent, she got up from bed wiping her eyes with the edge of her wrapper.
He was lost in his own thoughts, wondering how his smooth life, had turned to a tumultuous bumpy road. His uncle had come to Ohimini to take him back to Gboko, his father had fought him with a cutlass, not even Pa Onoja.

Ogar had smashed the windscreen of his elder brother’s car. And injured his right eyes. Ogwuche heart cried when he saw the red blood sitting on his uncles eyes.
He wept so much when his uncle told him what Dooshima was going through, how miserable her life had turned. Ogar brought out his gun the police had seized and ordered Agada out of his house. He told him never to come back.
Ogwuche had enjoyed the sex with Onyabehi, it was sweeter than what he experienced the one time with Dooshima. Despite the sweetness, his mind was still far away. He wondered why his feet refused to take him out of his father’s house.
” Ogwuche what are you thinking about? ” His mother asked when he sat under the mango tree looking lost, he didn’t see his mother walk up to him, she had called his name thrice before he came around. He sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
“Mama I am fine. ” He said, then tucked his hands under his chin, he traveled to the world in his head.
She had lost hope of Ogwuche ever coming back to her, she had called his number and had gotten a reply from a lady, who told her not to call her husband’s number.
