CHAPTER 107

Ogwuche was outside breaking palm nuts to soak garri , Onyabehi had given the last food in the house to the children, they had just returned from school .
“Alice don’t touch the fish wait for us to finish the rice before we share the fish .” Igoche instructed her sister , who was bent on sharing the fish , she knew her brother he would surely cheat her , by cutting the fish with his spoon .
“No let’s share the fish you want to cheat me.” The two began to fight over the food , Onyabehi sneaked on them and gave them a good spank , which brought their brains to factory reset.
“So you want to kill your sister because of food ?” Onyabehi asked her son .”Give me the fish .” She collected it and shared it between them “If I hear pim from any of your mouths I’ll come and deal with you .” She said , they knew she was the iron lady , Ogwuche didn’t have time for anyone , he had never lifted his hands up to touch his children , he watched Onyabehi and the children act Nollywood movie.
“Mummy her fish is bigger than my own.”Igoche complained .
“Ehn Eat it like that , drink water .” Onyabehi said , before going into the house . Igoche left the food when it was remaining small for Alice , she happily sat on a rag and put the plate on her laps , she scooped every last grain of rice .
“Daddy can I go and play ball with them Silas and Onoja ?” Igoche asked , Ogwuche nodded . “Thank you daddy.” the boy said.
“Igoche come and remove your school uniform o!” Onyabehi hollered from the bedroom .

“Okay mummy am coming .” The boy said as he ran away , he joined the boys they were kicking the ball around under the son, Ogwuche watched the boys play , he remembered how he and Ejembi with their cousins and friends kicked the ball around in that same compound , he felt life replay itself , he saw the resemblance between him and his son , he wondered how he would look like when he was in his thirties.
Igoche collided with his cousin , he fell with head hitting the ground , Ogwuche shot up from the chair he was sitting , he waited for a second for his boy to stand up , Igoche remained on the ground .
The boys who some were older than Igoche encircled him , abandoning the ball ,it kept rolling and rested in the bush .
“Igoche ? Igoche wake up!” the boys thought he was trying to prank them , to scare them . Ogwuche had rushed down to his son he picked him from the ground , sand had cakes around his nose , where blood had mixed with sand around his nostrils .
“Igoche ? Igoche?” Ogwuche cried , he put two fingers to his wind pipe to check his pulse , it was silent . “Aaaarh God not again ! God not again !” He screamed as he lifted the boy to his shoulder, and ran into his father’s compound .

“Mama! Mama!” Ogwuche cried . “Mama come and see oh!” Ogwuche said sitting on the bare floor .
“Mama come and see oh what is this Na! mama why always me ehn what did I do!” Ogwuche cried as his mother ran out , she saw her seven yes old grandson, lying on the ground .
“Let us rush him to the clinic.” She shrieked , Onyabehi came out to see why her husband was screaming , she collapsed when she saw Igoche on the ground , only six months earlier had she buried a son , the women from the compound tried to resuscitate her .
Ene backed the limp boy on her back and tied wrapper around him , she and Ogwuche with a crowd of relatives and neighbours trooped to the nearby health centre.
The nurses collected the boy from his grandmother’s hand , Ogwuche was certain his son was dead , he was a doctor he should know , his skin had sagged , he could see his bones ,and he had pooped and peed ,he was just hanging in there having the slightest faith that God would do some miracle .

The crowd surged outside the health centre , more and more villagers made their way to the health centre. Ten minutes felt like a hundred hours as they waited for the doctors to bring news concerning the boy .
Soon the doctor came out , she was wearing a white lab coat,the black cord of the stethoscope hung around her neck , her mouth felt too heavy to break the news .
“Am sorry he was dead on arrival.”She said , as she lay a hand on Ogwuche’s shoulder , Ogwuche sank to the floor weeping, saliva and mucus swam down his face , the boy was wrapped in Ene’s wrapper .
Ogwuche carried his sons corpse as he cried along the way , the sympathisers wailed and sang sorrowful dirgies as they escorted the corpse of the little boy home.
Onyabehi who had been revived , threw herself on the ground rolling , she broke into a frenzied cry , Ogbole had ran to the Village square were Simon goes to drink to go and call him , he returned to meet a wailing party in his compound .

“I want to die oh! I want to die oh Jesus I want to die oh!” Onyabehi kept on crying. “Who have I wronged oh ! My son oh ! Igoooooche! Igoooooche! why will you die and leave my heart empty o! Igoche why will you die and leave my life empty oh!” She cried rolling on the ground .
Simon grabbed his corpse of his grandson , he began to stride away with it out of the compound , men from the compound chased after him , trying to know where he was taking the corpse he ignored them , he was walking faster than a horse , he arrived at Sunny’s house .
He sat on the ground and dropped the wrapped corpse of Igoche on the ground . “Sunny come and eat my grand child oh!Sunny you have fulfilled your promise come out now! Come and eat Igoche! What have I ever done to you that you want to finish my grandchildren!” Simon cried , the men tried to get him up he refused .
“Sunny must tell me what I did to him ! why is he killing my grandchildren!” Simon squeaked and wailed , Sunny had the noise reverberating outside his house , he came out to meet a mammoth crowd of people besieging his house .
