CHAPTER 103

The emergency ward, housed over ten patients, beds lying shoulders to shoulder, Dooshima had placed a call to Aaron mama’s first son in Abuja ,he had promised that he would be coming to Ushongo the next day .
Dooshima paid for mama’s bills with the money she had gotten from Terdue .
“Hello Prisca has Gift brought Shiana back from school?” Dooshima asked , she had stepped out of the ward , to the long white corridor of the hotel to check on her daughter.
“Yeah she’s back , how is grandma ?” Prisca asked , she had returned back to Lessel after grandma was admitted . “Has she woken up ?” She asked .
“No she’s not woken up , but the doctors are attending to her , please I prepared spaghetti, it’s inside the kitchen cabinet, help me get it out , microwave it for Shiana , please let her sleep in your place tonight .” Dooshima said over the phone.
“Okay no qualms , have you reached any of Mama’s children ?” Prisca asked .

“Well her eldest son Aaron called me , he said he’ll be in Lessel by ten eleven today , that he would be in the hospital at first light tomorrow morning .” Dooshima said , a nurse dressed in a blue scrub came to call Dooshima.
“Please the doctor wants to see you .” The nurse said , Dooshima hung up her phone and followed. The doctors three of them were standing around mama Amos’s bed, she lay on the bed , her eyes tightly shut , still unconscious.
“Are you here daughter or grandchild?” One of the doctors asked Dooshima .
“She’s my landlady , she’s like a mother to me .”Dooshima said .
“Doesn’t she have any relative we can reach ? We need money to put her on oxygen, They’re moving the oxygen tank down here , we don’t have much in the hospital.” The male doctor , who looked like the most senior amongst the three said .
“How much is Oxygen for a day ?” Dooshima asked .
“It’s Four thousand five hundred naira for an hour.” The plumpy female doctor said ,Dooshima nodded .

“Please put her on Oxygen , I’ll pay .” Dooshima said , as she sat on a chair provided next to Grandma, the nurse technician arrived with the gas tank , it was like a cooking gas canister , with host that was connected to her nose to feed her oxygen , Dooshima lay her head on the next to Mama Amos chest , she heard her breath in and out .
At about ten P.M over about ten hours since she fell , Mama Amos woke up from coma , she wrestled with the mask and took it off her face , she sucked in fresh air .
“Dooshima where am I ?” She asked , Dooshima woke up from her shot nap .
“Mama you’re awake ?” Dooshima asked , she nodded .
“Please let me go and call the doctor .”Dooshima said as she rushed out of the ward ,soon she returned with a doctor on her tail .
“Mama how are you doing ?” The doctor asked , flashing a mini torchlight into grandma’s eyeballs and her mouth .
“I am fine .”Grandma said , apart from the head throbbing headache that was hitting her Brain like a carpenter’s hammer she was fine.

“You blood pressure is still high at one sixty over one thirty , we’ll give you drugs to bring it down to a normal level . ” He said, mama nodded.
“But you would have to stop worrying your mind if you don’t want this to happen again .” The doctor said , mama Amos managed a smile .
She was given her night dosage of drugs ,which included a nerve relaxer and a sedative, she slept calmly . Dooshima lay a wrapper beside mama Amos bed on the cold tiled floor was freezing cold , Dooshima was tapped out of sleep .
“Mama are you awake ?” Dooshima asked , rubbing off sleep from her eyes, she stretched her arms in the air and let out a loud yawn .
“Yes I am Dooshima help me to the bathroom .” Mama Amos asked, Dooshima nodded and helped the old woman out of bed , she took off the IV cord that stick to her wrist , then held her as they walked to the toilet .
Dooshima could hear the sound of grandma stomach rumbling as she excreted liquid faeces . Dooshima passed the toilet paper to her , and afterwards cleaned the toilet , before they walked at snail speed back to the ward , mama lay down on her bed .

“Thank you Dooshima.” Mama Amos said .
“You’re welcome mama .” Dooshima said she got the plastic chair the hospital had given and sat next to Grandma.
